Sciatica

Sciatica is caused by nerve depression of the largest nerve in the leg. Patients suffering from sciatica pain will feel it primarily originate in the low back, buttock, or hip and then travel down one or both legs. The nerve pain of sciatica varies dramatically from patient to patient. Some experience it only during a certain activity or when their body has been especially active and is fatigued; many pregnant women experience sciatica; and some patients have the sciatica pain constantly.

Treatments for Sciatica Pain Relief

The pain experienced with sciatica is as varied as the causes and intensity. Some patients report experiencing dull, achy, toothache-like pain, while others say it is intense and sporadic like an electric shock. Other symptoms include burning, numbness and tingling sensations.

Chiropractic care is a very effective sciatica treatment. At Northern Nevada Chiropractic, our doctors are specially trained to treat sciatica. They will first go through a detailed exam, possibly including x-ray or advanced imaging to diagnose if the patients complaint truly is sciatica. If the patient is suffering from sciatica, there are many different treatment plans based on the cause fo the sciatica pain:
Spinal Decompression: If the doctors determine your sciatica is a result of disc related injury or issue, they may recommend Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

  • Ice Therapy: This reduces inflammation and helps to control sciatic pain.
  • Ultrasound: The gentle heat created by sound waves penetrates deep into tissues, which increases circulation and helps to reduce muscle spasms, cramping, swelling, stiffness, and pain.
  • Spinal Adjustment: Spinal adjustment helps to reduce nerve irritability responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica.
  • Massage: This can help muscles around the nerve to relax, decreasing pressure and relieving pain. This is especially effective in pregnant women suffering from sciatica.

Dr. Welch discusses how spinal decompression helps sciatica

Spinal decompression therapy is a very effective treatment for patients with sciatica or lower back pain. It is a non surgical, non invasive therapy that is actually quite relaxing. Spinal decompression therapy gives significant relief to patients with nerve pain and lower back issues.
